Solved homicides in Memphis: MPD and TBI numbers differ

TBI recently released its 2014 crime statistics.

The numbers showed that last year, the Memphis Police Department reported 145 homicides to TBI.

Of those, 60 of them were cleared.

Those numbers implied MPD solved about 41% of last year’s murders.

That was a far cry from the number MPD released earlier this year.

“The total clearance rate for the Memphis Police Department’s Homicide Bureau for 2014 was 77 percent,” the department told us.

“They may be looking at different details than we are,” said TBI spokesperson Josh DeVine. “When it comes to this, I can certainly only speak for the numbers they’ve submitted to TBI.”

TBI is working to gather more information about its statistics to share with WREG.
